We support independent music. And so do you, by coming to our concerts and enjoying the wonderful music our artists create.
But the music industry has changed. On one hand, record contracts don't mean as much as they used to. But, on the other hand, making a record is (physically) easier for an artist to do themselves. And so we see many artists - and virtually every artist we host here at MCC - going through that process; raising money, hiring a producer and a band, renting studio time, hiring engineers to mix & master, hiring artists to create the package & artwork, producing the physical CDs or LPs ...
What we all see, as music lovers, is the final product - great music written and performed by artists we love. But the artist just has more work than ever to get their music out. And the very first step in this process - aside from writing, of course :) - is to raise the money to get all of this done. Many have turned to crowd-funding, and that's where we can all help, but also have a little fun.
Most artists create categories of rewards for their supporters, for contributions ranging from as little as $10 to thousands. We won't go into all the details here, but we have decided to try & support at least some of our artists' crowd-funding campaigns, by collecting hand-written lyrics by some of our favorite artists. We have handwritten lyrics by Kelley McRae, Carrie Rodriguez, Barbara Nesbitt and Carrie Elkin, and are waiting for a few others. You might take a completely different route and just pre-order the CD, or get back-stage passes for an upcoming concert, or even be listed in the liner notes as an executive producer!
We encourage you to check into supporting your favorite artists by helping them make their records. It enables the artists to get their music out independently, and it will create a personal relationship between you and them. Check out one of the links here, or your favorite artists' website.
